Cyclospora outbreak hits Florida with more than 200 cases | County-by-county breakdown
Cases of a parasitic infection are increasing across the United States, with 258 confirmed cases reported in Florida.
What is Cyclospora?
“Cyclospora is a foodborne parasite that gets into people’s bodies, particularly their gut, and causes a diarrheal illness,” said Dr. Steven Goldberg, chief medical officer for HealthTrackRx, an outpatient infectious disease laboratory.
What’s causing the outbreak?
Researchers believe that contaminated produce, particularly lettuce and other salad greens, may be contributing to the current outbreak.
How to avoid contamination?
Florida farmers are encouraging people to eat locally grown produce to avoid national outbreaks.
To prevent contamination, farmers are taking additional precautions, such as using treated water rather than canal water to irrigate their crops.
