A 4-year-old boy remains in critical condition Friday, two days after an unintentional shooting in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, the boy’s mother called 911 and said her son had just shot himself, and the gun was inside their house, according to the call released Friday.
While deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue were on the way to the shooting scene in the 4000 block of Southwest 15th Street, first responders learned the boy’s parents took him to a fire station nearby, BSO spokesperson Claudinne Caro said in a statement.
The boy’s mother pleaded with the 911 operator for help to hurry as car horns honked in the background and a man yelled, “Go! Go! Go!”
As they arrived at a fire station on McNab Road, the phone line remained open and the woman could be heard talking to firefighters.
The boy’s mother asked someone if her son was OK and if he had a pulse, moments before sirens could be heard blaring. A man could be heard responding, “I don’t know” in the background of the 911 call.
Fire rescue crews started treating the boy when they arrived, Caro said, and he was taken to a hospital.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released additional information about how the shooting happened. The Sheriff’s Office was still investigating Friday.
