City of Apopka approves 10% property tax hike
APOPKA, Fla. —
The Apopka City Commission voted 4-1 to approve a 10% property tax hike after weeks of debate and failed attempts to agree on higher proposals.
Nadia Anderson was the only commissioner who opposed the hike after expressing concerns.
The city had previously proposed a 22% property tax increase, but anything above 10% requires a unanimous vote. Without Anderson’s support, the higher proposal could not pass.
For the past three meetings, Anderson and Mayor Bryan Nelson have been unable to reach an agreement.
“I don’t believe in blank checks,” Anderson said during the meeting.
“This commission has never been more transparent,” Commissioner Nick Nesta said.
The property tax rate is not finalized yet.
The next step in the process is to approve a budget, with the first public hearing scheduled for Sept. 3.
