FORT PIERCE — A brilliant mathematician’s death leaves behind a mysterious proof — and questions about genius, mental illness and who deserves the credit.
The Pineapple Playhouse will open its 2026-27 season Aug. 28 with “Proof,” David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama.
The play follows Catherine, a young woman who spent years caring for her brilliant but mentally ill father. After his death, a groundbreaking mathematical proof is discovered, raising questions about its authorship and Catherine’s sanity.
The psychological mind-twisting production will run through Sept. 13 at the 117-seat community theater, 700 W. Weatherbee Road in Fort Pierce. The schedule includes 10 performances, with 2 p.m. matinees and 7 p.m. evening shows.
Michael Pisacane will direct the production, marking his fifth time directing at the theater.
“‘Proof’ won both a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize in 2005, and was recently revived on Broadway with an all-star cast, including Don Cheadle,” Pisacane said.
Jessica Lesko, a veteran actor and director, will lead the cast as Catherine. The cast also includes Martin Fitzpatrick, Caroline Remillard and Ray Balsamo.
The Pineapple Playhouse presents six mainstage productions each season, along with a holiday show. The nonprofit community theater has operated for more than 50 years.
Its mission is to provide a gathering place for the community and serve as a creative center “where stories are brought to life.”
