Man accused of buying $159K in cattle with bad checks, sheriff says

LEON COUNTY, Texas. (KWTX/Gray News) – A man in Texas is accused of purchasing dozens of cattle with bad checks.

Authorities began their investigation on July 17, 2026, after receiving a report that a person had purchased 77 head of cattle from Buffalo Livestock Marketing Inc. using nonsufficient funds.

The total value of the nonsufficient funds checks used in the purchase was $159,604.03, officials said.

Payton Dean Carroll, 25, was arrested by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with second-degree felony cattle theft.
