An incoming freshman on the Miami Hurricanes football team announced that he will not play football this season.
Cornerback Jontavius Wyman, who was a four-star recruit in Miami’s 2026 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings, wrote Saturday on his personal X account that he has “decided to sit out from football this year” after “a lot of thought, prayer, and conversations with the people closest to me.”
“I WILL BE BACK!!” he wrote at the end of the post.
Wyman was ranked as the No. 41 overall cornerback and No. 376 player regardless of position by the 247Sports composite ranking.
The Georgia native is one of four cornerbacks who signed with Miami in the most recent recruiting cycle, along with Camdin Portis, Jaelen Waters and Brody Jennings.
The Hurricanes’ cornerback room is stacked entering the 2026 season. Miami returns its primary core of outside corners from last season in Xavier Lucas, OJ Frederique, Ethan O’Connor, Damari Brown and Jaboree Antoine. One of Omar Thornton or Bryce Fitzgerald is projected to be the team’s starting nickel corner (with the other starting at safety opposite Zechariah Poyser). Portis has a case to be the backup nickel.
That likely would have limited Wyman’s ability to contribute as a true freshman to special teams barring injuries.
