This September, the City of Sanibel will transform Community Park into a striking display of remembrance and unity with “A Field of Heroes,” a tribute honoring the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, as the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Community members can sponsor American flags that will become part of the large-scale memorial installation leading up to Sept. 11. Each flag will represent one life lost and stand as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the enduring American spirit. Organizers report that flag sponsorships are approaching the halfway mark toward their goal of sponsoring all 2,977 flags, and they are encouraging the community to help close the gap in the weeks ahead.

The installation will feature flags placed throughout Sanibel Community Park, creating a sweeping field of red, white and blue meant to inspire reflection and bring residents together in remembrance. Organizers hope the display will honor those who died in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., while also recognizing the heroism of first responders, military personnel and ordinary citizens on one of the darkest days in American history.

Residents and visitors can sponsor flags in honor of loved ones, first responders, military members or other individuals connected to 9/11. Sponsorships are priced at $10 for one flag, $45 for five, or $100 for 12, with each flag tagged with the name of one of the 2,977 victims. Sponsorships are available through the Sanibel Recreation Center or can be purchased conveniently online through the City’s See My Legacy initiative page at app.seemylegacy.com/community/2787/campaign/9060.

On September 11, 2026, the community will gather at the Sanibel Community House for a morning ceremony marking the 25th anniversary. The event will bring together residents, visitors, first responders, veterans and families for a time of reflection and gratitude, honoring those lost a quarter-century ago and the resilience that followed.

The Field of Heroes memorial will be open to the public free of charge in the days surrounding September 11, giving families and visitors the chance to experience the installation at their own pace. Organizers see it as a place for quiet reflection, education and unity — particularly for younger generations who did not witness the events of 2001 firsthand.
