Mariner High School football coach under investigation, Lee County School Board member confirms
CAPE CORAL, Fla. —
The Lee County School Board chair confirmed that an investigation is underway at Mariner High School involving a football coach and players following an overnight incident at the school.
“Basically, we can’t do anything as far as comments, because we may eventually have to do a termination hearing if it goes that far, is warranted,” Armor Persons, Lee County School Board chair, said.
Persons revealed that the investigation stems from an overnight event at the school involving the coach and football players.
“Well, when it happened, we were notified by the attorney that there had been a suspension of a coach for an incident that happened with some football players, overnight, that. So that’s about all that as far as the details that I really know at this particular time,” Persons said.
Social media allegations prompted Persons to respond.
When asked if the investigation would be discussed at Monday’s school board meeting, Persons said, “No, it’s not on our agenda because it’s being investigated and It’ll go through all sorts of processes there. I imagine it could well be brought up during public comment though.”
The Cape Coral Police Department, head football coach Tyran Jones, parents, and the Mariner Booster Club were contacted for comment but have not yet responded.
It was not made immediately clear which football coach is under investigation, or the reason for the leave.
