Oftentimes, the closure of a popular theme park attraction is met with anger and sadness from fans. Universal Studios Florida is no stranger to this, as fans still lament losing attractions like Back to the Future: The Ride and T2:3D Battle Across Time decades after their closures.

All of which arguably makes it surprising that right now some fans are cheering the fact that Universal is closing a major attraction four months earlier than previously announced!

Back in January, in conjunction with the announcement that a version of the Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift coaster is coming to Orlando, Universal announced that the Fast & Furious: Supercharged attraction would be closing in 2027, which was greeted with celebration by some circles. Then, in mid-July, Universal bumped the ride’s closure date up to August 17th, which again was greeted with celebration in those same circles.

So, why exactly are some Universal fans so eager to see the ride go? The first reason is that Supercharged has never been all that popular. The attraction, which is based on a segment from the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour (which closed in 2025), sees guests board a “party-bus” for a screen-based romp through the Fast & Furious universe.

While the ride’s premise sounds very promising on paper, it’s proven somewhat controversial since it opened back in 2018, with many fans disliking the quality of the 3D film, the slow-moving ride system (especially galling to some given that “fast” is literally in the franchise’s name), and the fact that it took the massive amount of real estate that used to continue both Earthquake! and the Beetlejuice’s Graveyard Review.

Speaking of that real estate, that brings us to the other reason that the ride’s closure has piqued the interest of many Universal. Rumors have been flying as to what Universal is going to replace Fast & Furious: Supercharged with, with everything from Wicked to the return of a “classic” Universal property like Ghostbusters or the aforementioned Back to the Future.

For their part, Universal has yet to comment on what’s replacing Supercharged, and it seemed likely they may focus on getting the Orlando version of the Fast and Furious: Hollywood Drift coaster open before shifting gears (pun fully intended). Like its Universal Studios Hollywood counterpart, Orlando’s Hollywood Drift is scheduled to feature vehicles that can mimic 360-degree drifting and a 170-foot vertical spike that will shoot guests nearly 17 stories in the air, among other thrilling elements.
