Florida Coast Guard seizes 2,400 pounds of suspected marijuana near Bahamas

MIAMI, Fla. (CBS12) — A Coast Guard crew seized nearly 2,400 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $2.8 million after stopping a drug-smuggling boat near the Bahamas.

The Coast Guard Cutter Charles Sexton intercepted the vessel Saturday about 80 miles southwest of Great Inagua, Bahamas, according to a USCG news release.

Working with the Royal Bahamian Defence Force, crews boarded the boat and found 97 bales of suspected marijuana. Three people on board were taken into custody and turned over to Bahamian authorities for prosecution.

“This interdiction highlights the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to combating transnational organized crime in the region,” said Lt. Peter Fager, commanding officer of the Charles Sexton.

The Coast Guard said the operation is part of ongoing efforts with international partners to stop illegal drug trafficking throughout the Caribbean.
