On Friday, July 31, 2026, School Board Member Roberto J. Alonso, District 4, in collaboration with the Office of Senator René García, hosted a successful Back-to-School Giveaway at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School, providing more than 1,000 students with new backpacks filled with essential school supplies. The event brought together community partners and local families to help students prepare for the upcoming school year, easing the financial burden on parents while ensuring children have the supplies they need to start the school year ready to learn.
Beyond school supply distributions, the event provided comprehensive community resources and engaging educational experiences. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital was on site providing free EKG screenings for families, while Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library distributed free books to foster youth literacy. Attending families also had the chance to explore the Space Star Lab to learn about Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School’s Aerospace Program, all while dedicated student volunteers from the high school’s Key Club assisted with event operations throughout the day.
The outreach effort impacted students across 21 District 4 schools, drawing attendees from Amelia Earhart Elementary School, Bob Graham Education Center, Flamingo Elementary School, Henry H. Filer Middle School, Hialeah Middle School, James H. Bright/J.W. Johnson Elementary School, John G. DuPuis Elementary School, Lawton Chiles Middle School, M.A. Milam K-8 Center, Mae M. Walters Elementary School, Meadowlane Elementary School, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Miami Lakes Middle School, North Hialeah Elementary School, North Twin Lakes Elementary School, Palm Lakes Elementary School, Palm Springs Elementary School, Palm Springs Middle School, Palm Springs North K-8, Spanish Lake Elementary School, and Twin Lakes Elementary School.
“Preparing students for success begins with ensuring they have the tools and support they need before the first day of school,” said School Board Member Alonso. “Seeing our community come together to provide school supplies, health screenings, books, and educational opportunities for more than 1,000 students is truly inspiring. I am grateful to Senator René García, our community partners, volunteers, and everyone who helped make this event possible. Together, we are investing in our children and helping every student begin the school year ready to learn and succeed.”
The event’s success was made possible through strong community collaboration and support from vital organizations, including Senator René García’s Office, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez’s Office, Miami-Dade College – Hialeah Campus, EdFed, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library, Parent Academy, and ShareYourHeart. Through their joint dedication, District 4 families received the health, educational, and material support needed for a strong start to the academic year.
