ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Rays have made another move right before the trade deadline.
The Rays announced Monday that they have acquired Miami Marlins catcher Liam Hicks.
Hicks, 27, is in his second year in the majors.
He is batting .282 this year, with 14 homers and 62 RBI. He is known as a contact hitter who can also play a little first base.
The Rays are sending three players to Miami to complete the deal: right-handed pitcher Jacob Kisting, infielder Adrian Santana, and infielder Brayden Taylor.
ESPN is also reporting that the Rays picked up veteran relief pitcher Tyler Wells from the Baltimore Orioles. Wells, a right-hander, has a 2.67 ERA in 43 games this season.
Major League Baseball teams have until 6 p.m. Monday to make a trade for a player who could then be eligible for the postseason.
The acquisition of Hicks came one day after the team traded for starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.
They got him from the Mets in exchange for three prospects.
The Rays entered play Monday 2.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. They start a series at the Colorado Rockies tonight.
