Sharks caught on video off shore in St. Lucie County, Jupiter
Possible great white hooked by fishermen, hammerhead washes up dead.
JUPITER, Fla. —
Two sharks were spotted along the Atlantic Ocean shore — one that washed up dead and another of fishermen struggling with a hooked one.
Both incidents occurred Friday, with video sent to WPBF.
Jensen Beach resident and avid beach walker Kathy Green was walking along Normandy Beach on Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County when she filmed a group of fishermen struggling with a 12-foot shark they had hooked.
The fishermen unhooked the deadly beast and released it back into the water.
Shark expert and conservationist Jim Abernethy believes it was a great white shark by looking at the video.
Also Friday, a hammerhead shark was spotted dead just south of the Jupiter Beach Resort.
Christopher Ray, a musician, submitted video to WPBF.
Later that day, Fish & Wildlife removed the shark.
Shark Week 2026 ran from July 26 to Saturday on the Discovery Channel.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has ordered Martin County, which also includes Hutchinson Island, to follow rules about people fishing for fish or sharks from the beach or shoreline.
Shark fishing requires a state saltwater fishing license to fish within 1,000 feet of the guarded beach boundaries at any time.
Under the current county ordinance, shark fishing is prohibited within 1,000 yards of the county’s four guarded beaches: Jensen, Stuart, Bathtub and Hobe Sound.
On Tuesday, commissioners postponed making a decision and asked attorneys to review the law.
