TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Joseph Williams, Wakulla County’s last living World War II veteran, was laid to rest Monday at the Tallahassee National Cemetery.
Dozens of family members and friends attended the burial service for Williams, who was born in Wakulla County in 1919 and served in the United States Navy during World War II.
After his military service, Williams served his community as a volunteer firefighter and a professional house painter. Family members said he was a dedicated public servant who left a lasting impact on those around him.
His granddaughter, Angela Hilliard, remembers him as someone who consistently put others first.
“He was always giving of himself and always had a kind word or words to share with others,” Hilliard said. “I thank God for that every day and I will never, ever forget him. I will always wear him right here on my heart, and I’m going to miss him.”
Williams participated in Honor Flight Tallahassee in 2024, traveling to Washington, D.C., to tour the World War II Memorial for the first time. The 106-year-old veteran was recognized throughout the Big Bend region and received a special proclamation in Leon County in October.
