Judge denies bond for Jacksonville State basketball player charged with rape
A Calhoun County judge has denied bond for Jacksonville State University basketball player Daniel Adegboyega, who is charged with first-degree rape.
District Judge Randy J. Moeller issued the ruling Tuesday, one day after an Aniah’s Law hearing in which prosecutors argued Adegboyega should remain in jail while the case moves forward.
In a five-page order, Moeller found prosecutors showed that no set of release conditions would reasonably ensure Adegboyega returns to court or protect the community.

The order cited evidence presented at the hearing that included the alleged victim’s statements, text messages to her roommate sent during the incident, a completed rape kit, blood-stained clothing and other items collected from the apartment. It noted that additional laboratory testing and digital evidence remain pending.
Moeller also addressed testimony about Adegboyega’s immigration status, writing that an active ICE detainer creates a realistic possibility that he could be removed from the court’s jurisdiction while the criminal case is pending if released.
The order acknowledged testimony from Adegboyega’s host father, who offered to supervise him and testified that efforts are underway to resolve his immigration status, but concluded those factors did not outweigh the concerns raised by prosecutors.

The order also notes that Adegboyega has no known criminal history, but says his ties to Alabama are limited because he has lived in the state only a few months and has been suspended from the Jacksonville State basketball team.
“The State, by clear and convincing evidence, has proven that no condition or combination of conditions of release will reasonably ensure the Defendant’s appearance in court or protect the safety of the community or any person,” Moeller wrote.
