State maintenance building evacuated due to radon gas concerns

  • August 6, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A state-owned maintenance building, located on S Bronough St., was evacuated and shut down because of high levels of radon gas.

The maintenance building was evacuated late last month after an employee’s personal device detected possible elevated radon levels, according to state officials.

Long term exposure to the gas can cause lung cancer.

State officials say test results are pending, but that the facility’s built-in radon mitigation system is working as expected.

A lawyer for an employee at the building sent a cease and desist letter to the state, saying employees are concerned about how long they may have been exposed.
