TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – As Leon County students prepare to head back to the classroom next week, the Tallahassee Police Department is reminding drivers that school zone speed enforcement cameras will be back in full effect, and this year, there will be no grace period.
Last school year, drivers received a 30-day warning period before citations were issued. But beginning Aug. 12, drivers caught speeding in school zones will immediately face fines.
TPD says the nearly 30 school zone speed enforcement cameras across Tallahassee will be active 30 minutes before school starts, 30 minutes after school ends, and throughout the entire school day.
Officials say it’s important for drivers to remember that even when school zone lights are not flashing, the cameras may still be active.
“But it’s important to remember that the lights will not be flashing the entire time during the school day, but the cameras will be active,” said Captain Damon Miller.
According to TPD, the cameras will not be active on holidays or early release days.

Last school year was the program’s first year, and TPD says more than 44,000 tickets were issued.
“Before we started the program, we had our cameras set up just to basically get a gauge as to how everyone was driving, their patterns and speeding, and a lot of people were actually doing 40 miles over the speed limit during those respective areas, so it’s kind of alarming just to see how fast people are actually going,” Miller said.
TPD says the camera takes a photo of the vehicle, which is then sent to a company and reviewed by the department to confirm the violation occurred and verify the owner of the vehicle.
If a vehicle is traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, a $100 violation is mailed to the registered owner.
Drivers have a designated amount of time to pay the notice.
“You have a designated amount of time to respond to that notice and pay the notice. If you don’t pay the notice, it will turn into a uniform traffic citation, so please slow down,” Miller said.
TPD says full enforcement begins Aug. 12. Officials are reminding drivers that there will be no grace period this school year, and no one is exempt.
