It’s not uncommon to see Universal Orlando close rides temporarily. But it’s a good idea to know about those closures BEFORE your vacation!
From time to time, rides will need to close for refurbishments to make sure they’re up to Universal’s safety and technological standards. Typically, these closures are posted on the Universal Orlando website in advance so that you can plan your trip with them in mind. And now, a new closure has been added to the list for 2027!
The Universal Orlando website has been updated with a closure for Fyre Drill at Epic Universe. The attraction is set to be closed from January 25th, 2027 through February 4th, 2027.
Fyre Drill is located in How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk and is the park’s only water ride. We often see water rides at theme parks close for refurbishment in the winter months, as they typically need more maintenance than non-water attractions and these types of rides are less popular during the cold season.
Fyre Drill closed during a similar time period last year, and even during the time that it was open in the winter, it often had a very short wait. It can be extremely popular in the summer though, particularly during the hottest part of the day. Everyone’s looking for a chance to cool off!
The premise of the ride is that it teaches you how to put out fires — a particularly good skill in a town inhabited by dragons. It’s hosted by Ruffnut and Tuffnut and is a shooter-style ride where you can blast water out of cannons at targets and other boats.
Currently, the only other attraction scheduled for a closure at Epic Universe is The Untrainable Dragon, which will be unavailable from September 15th-20th, 2026. We’ll keep an eye out for any other closures that get added to the calendar, and let you know.
