A potential television show based on Epcot’s Spaceship Earth attraction is in the works for streaming on Disney+, according to a story published by the Hollywood Reporter.
A pilot has been ordered, and the plot will use the ride’s journey through time.
“When a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes awry, a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself,” the show’s logline says, according to the long-running Los Angeles-based trade paper.
Spaceship Earth is the iconic giant-golf-ball-looking attraction near the front entrance of the theme park. It is an opening-day attraction at Epcot, the second theme park built at Walt Disney World, debuting in 1982.
Inside the structure is a dark ride that climbs past scenes capturing global advances in communication and technology. There have been a handful of iterations of the ride over the decades, but among the current sights are cave paintings, Phoenicians coming up with an alphabet, monks making manuscripts, the burning of the library in Alexandria, early printing presses, the moon landing (with a Walter Cronkite cameo), the garage development of personal computers and more.
The action has been narrated by actress Judi Dench since 2007.
Other Disney attractions have been the basis for television and movie productions, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise, all operating at Magic Kingdom theme park.
Jason Fuchs and Michael Waldron are writing the Spaceship Earth pilot, the Hollywood Reporter said.
