Cape Coral City Council rejected a proposal to raise fees by as much as 80% for youth sports leagues and other users of city parks, directing staff to instead address a $1.6 million budget gap by eliminating funding for long-vacant positions and using interest earnings. Youth baseball and soccer leaders told council the proposed increases would force significant registration fee hikes and make programs less affordable for families. Council members said the fee proposal originated with staff, not the elected board. The budget workshop vote was nonbinding, with final decisions on the fiscal 2027 budget scheduled for public hearings in September.
