Lauderhill Police have identified the shooter of man who was killed in a Lauderhill neighborhood on Friday afternoon, but have not charged him in connection with the man’s death.
Steve Joseph, 23, was shot multiple times shortly after 1 p.m. during a dispute in the 1500 block of Northwest 33rd Avenue, according to police. The shooting took place after a confrontation between multiple people who knew one another.
Lauderhill police officers arrived and found Joseph with multiple gunshot wounds, Sgt. Parys Thomas, a police department spokesperson, said in a news release. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he was pronounced dead.
Afterwards, detectives identified the shooter as Roderick Daniel Thomas Jr., 22, according to the release. When police contacted him, he “willingly came in to speak with investigators regarding the incident,” the release said. Thomas was arrested after the interview on a charge of violating his probation by possessing a firearm, but is not currently charged in connection to Joseph’s death because detectives are still reviewing sworn witness statements and other evidence to determine whether the shooting was justified.
The case will then be presented to the Broward State Attorney’s Office Homicide Unit, which will determine if Thomas will face any additional charges.
