LAUDERHILL, Fla. — On Saturday, Lauderhill detectives were investigating a shooting that killed 23-year-old Steve Joseph on Friday in Broward County.

Corrections held Roderick Thomas on Saturday without bond at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale, according to inmate records.

Police officers arrested Thomas, 22, after the fatal shooting on Friday in the area of the 1500 block of Northwest 33rd Avenue.

Thomas, a convicted felon in Broward, was on probation until June 14, 2028, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Broward County corrections held Thomas for a probation violation on an aggravated battery charge, according to inmate records.

Neighbors Verdis Whitehead and Alsia Shakir said they heard the shooting. Shakir said she also heard a girl screaming. Both said they saw Joseph bleeding.

Whitehead said there was a woman involved in a conflict before the shooting.

“She told them she didn’t want them at her house, and I guess they came back … and started arguing,” Whitehead said on Friday.

Fire rescue personnel took Joseph to the Broward Health Medical Center, where he died, according to the Lauderhill Police Department.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases who wants to remain anonymous to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
