ORLANDO, Fla. — Mills 50 is already known for its food, nightlife and local businesses, and now, even more restaurants are getting ready to call the area home.

With more than 20 new restaurants and businesses coming to the district, local leaders and business owners say they’re excited about the growth, but parking and pedestrian safety remain top of mind.

Nicholas Olivieri and Eddie Nickell, owners of Bites & Bubbles Restaurant and Bar, have been part of the Mills 50 district for many years.

“We love this district, we’ve been in this district since 2007. As a matter a fact, Eddie named the district,” Olivieri and Nickell said.

Olivieri and Nickell say they’re excited to see the growth.

“We have one right next to us here at Bites and Bubbles that’s getting ready to open later on this year, so it’s exciting, we love it,” Olivieri and Nickell said.

That growth isn’t slowing down anytime soon. More places to eat means more people and more cars. Leaders say parking has been an issue, but solutions are in the works.

The city has proposed a seven-story parking garage near Mills Avenue and East Colonial Drive, which could add hundreds of spaces.

“That’s one of the major complaints we get of no parking. Then of course, they move back into the neighborhoods, and we want to keep our neighbors happy, they’re the heart of our city, and of our neighborhood,” Jeff Dry, board president of Mills 50 Main Street, said.

Dry says it’s not just cars that are on the minds of people who live, work and eat in the area. Pedestrian safety is also important.

The city of Orlando is proposing a mid-block crosswalk at Canton Street, designed to make it easier and safer for people to cross busy Mills Avenue.

“We would love to have more, if we can have the city work on that, that’d be fantastic. Especially in that busy area right where they’re going to put the crosswalk that’s where some of the new restaurants are opening, so it will help. But a couple more would be great,” Dry said.

Some of the new restaurants and businesses have already opened, but the majority are expected to open by the end of this year.
