Brett M. Amron earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Miami School of Law in 1998. He began his career as a state prosecutor in Miami-Dade County before co-founding Bast Amron LLP in 2009, helping establish the boutique firm as a South Florida powerhouse for insolvency and business litigation with a national reach.
Recognized in Chambers USA and Best Lawyers in America, Amron frequently represents court-appointed fiduciaries, trustees, and corporations, recovering tens of millions of dollars for clients. Active in the South Florida community, he frequently lectures on insolvency law and is involved with various professional and charitable organizations.
Deeply committed to supporting the next generation of lawyers, Amron’s firm works closely with the School of Law’s Office of Career and Professional Development as a key alumni-employer partner, hiring students and alumni.
What aspects of the curriculum or faculty had the most significant impact on your legal education and career trajectory?
Two elements of my Miami Law experience shaped my career. First, Professor Richard Hausler instilled a simple but enduring lesson: always be prepared. That discipline became a cornerstone of my courtroom advocacy, first as a state prosecutor in Miami-Dade County and later in complex insolvency litigation.
Second, the Litigation Skills program gave me practical, hands-on training that traditional casebook courses couldn’t. Combined with my internship experience, it gave me a foundation for what it actually means to practice as a litigator—thinking on my feet, understanding procedure, and translating legal theory into courtroom strategy.
Those experiences prepared me not just to practice law, but to build a firm—co-founding Bast Amron and growing it into a respected insolvency litigation boutique. They’re also why I stay connected to the School of Law today, working with the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) to hire students and give back the kind of experience that shaped my path.
How did your education at the University of Miami School of Law prepare you for your career?
Miami Law taught me how to think like a lawyer. My professors challenged me to question everything, to be prepared for any angle an argument might take, and to know where to find the information needed to formulate real answers, not just rely on assumptions.
That mindset, curiosity paired with relentless preparation, became the backbone of my legal career. It served me as a state prosecutor in Miami-Dade County, where thinking on my feet and anticipating counterarguments were essential, and it continues to serve me today.
My studies at Miami Law showed me how to translate analytical thinking into courtroom advocacy, which shaped my trajectory from prosecutor to litigator to firm builder. And it’s the same approach I encourage in the young lawyers and students I now mentor.
What opportunities or connections did you gain at the law school, and how did they influence your career?
The most important connection I made at Miami Law wasn’t professional at all, it was personal. I met my wife, and she has been the single biggest influence on both my career and my life ever since.
Professionally, the Litigation Skills program fed my growing interest in litigation and opened the door to my first real opportunity: a certified legal internship with the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s Office. That experience, along with another formative internship I secured through the OCPD, gave me practical grounding that shaped my path as a litigator.
Just as valuable were the relationships I built along the way. I met many smart, talented, and genuine people at Miami Law, individuals I still count as colleagues and friends today. Between those connections and the opportunities the school provided, from meeting my wife to internships, Miami Law shaped nearly every part of my life and career.
