Martin County begins school year with smooth bus routes and optimism
MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. —
The first day of school in Martin County began with Superintendent Michael Maine greeting bus drivers and ended at the now “B”-rated Hobe Sound Elementary.
Maine started the day by meeting bus drivers at the transportation department.
District officials said enrollment this school year is flat, and bus routes were consolidated to increase efficiency and save costs.

“So far, everything that I have received by way of reports shows that everything was on time; all of our students arrived. I’m sure there were some delays due to traffic,” Maine said.

Traffic appeared manageable outside Hobe Sound Elementary Monday morning, and one crossing guard gave the first day of school high marks.
“It was the best day that we’ve had since I’ve done it. Normally it backs up really bad, but not this year,” the crossing guard said.

Crystal Brandt, a third grade teacher at Hobe Sound Elementary, shared her plans for the first day with her students.
“We’re going to write my class nest expectations. So we’re going to work in a group to write them,” Brandt said.
A fourth grader expressed excitement about returning to school.
“I’m excited to have friends again,” the student said.
Maine shared his hopes for the school year.
“I think that the end of the first week [is important] to ensure that not only do our students feel safe and are excited to be back, but that we’re also starting to get back into the academic routine,” Maine said.
Maine also outlined the district’s goals for the year: eliminating “C”-rated schools, ensuring 100% of students are on reading level, and making sure every student arrives home safely.
