A family is speaking out as a Wilton Manors teenager remains in intensive care days after he was struck by two cars while riding an electric bicycle.
Anthony McBride, Jr., 17, suffered a traumatic brain injury Thursday in the collision along North Andrews Avenue and Northwest 29th Street, and four days later was still in the Intensive Care Unit at Broward Health Medical Center.
“I’m just doing everything I can to hold myself together and be here for my son,” said Anthony McBride Sr. “I’m just taking it one hour at a time. From what I was told, he was hit by two vehicles. The first vehicle clipped him and slung him into the next vehicle.”
McBride Jr. has had multiple surgeries in the days since. His father says he suffered a collapsed lung, multiple skull fractures and broken ribs. They say brain swelling is the most critical injury.
“Everything else is secondary. We’re not worried about anything but his brain,” said McBride, Sr. “That’s the biggest worry right now because everything else he can recover from.”
Wilton Manors Police are investigating how the crash occurred. Detectives say all drivers involved have been identified and are cooperating with detectives.
“We just we just want to know what happened and we just are ready for him to wake up,” said McBride Jr.’s aunt, Amber McBride. “We just don’t know what he’s gonna be like when he wakes up. Is he going to remember us? Is he going to be able to walk? We’re just scared, is he going to know who we are?”
The family said Anthony’s recovery will last weeks in the ICU and months in the hospital after that. They’ve created a GoFundMe page asking for donations to pay for his medical expenses.
