Motorcycle crash survivor reunites with Fort Pierce hospital team
FORT PIERCE, Fla. —
Victor Lopez walked back into HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce eight months after a life-threatening motorcycle crash, this time to thank the team that helped save his life.
Lopez, who is now back home recovering and cherishing time with his family, returned to the hospital to express his gratitude to the medical professionals and first responders who cared for him during his critical moments.
“Very good, meant to be,” Lopez said.

His girlfriend, Stefany Sorto, described the reunion as “very special.” She added, “Everybody cares [about how he is doing] and to see him, he’s way better.”
Last December, Lopez was brought to the hospital in a coma-like state after a serious motorcycle crash. Doctors feared he might not survive.

“We were very concerned about significant traumatic brain injury. Also signs of anoxic brain injury, which is lack of oxygen to the brain from a significant head injury,” said Dr. Jason Moore, a trauma and acute care surgeon at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
As the medical team worked to stabilize Lopez, his family could only wait. Sorto, who was pregnant at the time, gave birth to their daughter, Juliet, in January while Lopez was still hospitalized.
Lopez spent nearly three months in the hospital before he was able to return home to Sorto, their son, and their newborn daughter.
Now, he has reunited with the EMS crew and medical team who cared for him during his darkest hours.
“I arrived on scene with the crews. He had heavy damage from a motorcycle accident. He was on the ground. We immediately called a trauma alert, notified the local trauma center here at Lawnwood so they would be prepared,” said Donny Stefani, deputy chief of operations for the St. Lucie County Fire District.

The first responders and medical professionals who met Lopez on one of the worst days of his life were able to see the results of their quick action and care.
Lopez credits his recovery to the medical teams who cared for him and the family who stood by his side.
