Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomed students, families, teachers and staff back to classrooms across the District today, Monday, August 10, 2026, marking the start of the 2026/27 school year with excitement, energy and a continued commitment to excellence.
Throughout the day, BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn, School Board members and District leaders visited schools showcasing teaching and learning, and highlighting the innovative programs, engaged learning environments and expanded opportunities available to students across the District.
“Today was a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Hepburn. “From the smiles and excitement of our students to the dedication of our teachers and staff, it was inspiring to see our schools come alive. We are beginning this school year with strong momentum, and we are focused on building on that success to ensure every student can thrive.”
The first day of school comes as BCPS continues to focus on increasing academic success after earning its third consecutive “A” grade from the state. This school year, BCPS is expanding opportunities for students through innovative academic programs, career and technical education, new career pathways and hands-on learning experiences designed to prepare students for college, careers and life. The District is also continuing to invest in school safety and security, as well as technology to support safe, engaging and future-focused learning environments.
Among the initiatives launching this school year is the Broward County School Bus Safety Program in partnership with BusPatrol. The initiative equips school buses with AI-powered stop-arm cameras to help deter motorists from illegally passing stopped school buses. The program will begin enforcement following a 30-day warning period, with citations beginning September 9.
Today’s first day of school also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for BCPS kindergarten students, who officially become members of the BCPS Class of 2039.
Following the school visits, BCPS hosted a First Day of School News Conference at the Kathleen C. Wright Administration Center to provide an update on the successful opening of schools and highlight District priorities for the 2026/27 school year.
