Orlando City is set to wrap up the first phase of the Leagues Cup with a home showdown against Atlético de San Luis on Wednesday night.

The Lions (1-1-0, 3 points) and San Luis (0-2-0, 0 points) kick off at Inter.co Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

“When we play at home and when we compete, we want to do our best to win. So we will try that as always,” said Orlando City interim head coach Martín Perelman. “We will prepare for the game, and we will be ready there to compete and try to win.”

Orlando enters this match after a 2-1 loss to Club León, and the team must win and get some help if to have any chance of advancing. The Lions are currently in 13th on the MLS side of the standings, and only the top four teams will advance.

The good news for Orlando City is that San Luis arrives having already been eliminated from the competition. They lost to Inter Miami 4-2 before falling to Nashville SC 4-1. Rafa Llorente has scored two of San Luis’ three goals, but the Liga MX side is unlikely to take any risks before they return to league play on Sunday.

Facing a side that has conceded eight goals in two games is good news for an Orlando team that needs to make up significant ground on goal differential to have a chance of advancing. If the Lions choose to go all-out on Wednesday, the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Justin Ellis should have plenty of opportunities to score. Tyrese Spicer has also been impressive for Orlando lately, adding six goal contributions in his past four games.

Orlando could also opt to rotate the squad, resting key players before returning to MLS action on Saturday. Daryl Dike and Joran Gerbet are two players working their way to full fitness who could see more significant minutes if Perelman wants to give his stars a chance to recover.

“This congested calendar is giving them opportunities, and we are happy for them,” Perelman added about the players on the fringes of the starting lineup. “Every single Orlando City player needs to be ready, and they are ready. So that’s good for us.”

After this, Orlando returns to league action with a visit from FC Cincinnati on Saturday.
