TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — School zone speed cameras across Tallahassee return to enforcement mode tomorrow, and this time there is no warning period.

More than 46,000 school-zone speeding violations were issued in Tallahassee last school year, each carrying a $100 penalty. Tallahassee police Capt. Zach Lyne said the revenue from those violations is split among multiple recipients.

“We issued over 46,000 notices of violation. Each violation is $100. And out of that, the money is divided into five different entities,” Lyne said.

From each $100 violation, $20 goes to the state Department of Revenue, $3 goes to FDLE training and $12 goes to Leon County Schools. The vendor receives $21.90, $5 goes toward school crossing guards, and the remaining $38.10 goes into the city’s general fund for public safety.

The school district’s share has drawn attention from school board members. “There’s a lot of talk in the community about the speeding tickets that happen around school and I noticed that we’ve received $280,000 for the district. So that part’s a good thing. And I just wanted to point it out since it’s here in this report,” a Leon County Schools school board member said.

Leon County Schools said the final total for the 2025–26 school year was $380,202.08. Communications Director Chris Petley said the money must be used for safety-related purposes. Based on Florida statute, Petley said the funds “must be used for school security initiatives or to improve the safety of student walking conditions.”

Police also said the city’s share is used for public safety initiatives.

Drivers who do not pay the $100 violation could face a $213 uniform traffic citation, according to Tallahassee police, though no points are added to a driver’s record. Lyne said the goal is compliance, not punishment.

“We just want voluntary compliance, and we want people to slow down in and around our school zones,” he said.

Tallahassee police said the cameras are enforced only on school days, not during evenings, weekends, holidays, teacher planning days or school breaks. Drivers are cited when they are traveling 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit.

Four more camera locations are still being built, which will add more Tallahassee school zones to the program.
