Broward County, FL – Drivers in Broward County will soon see increased enforcement around stopped school buses as Broward County Public Schools rolls out AI powered stop arm cameras across its entire fleet to help identify illegal passing violations and improve student safety.
The new technology will be active for the 2026 to 2027 school year, with students returning to class on August 10th.
School officials said drivers will receive warning notices for violations during a 30 day education period before citations are issued.
Full enforcement is scheduled to begin on September 9th.
The district is equipping approximately 1,300 school buses with camera systems designed to record traffic from multiple angles whenever a bus stops to load or unload students.
The cameras use artificial intelligence and license plate recognition technology to capture vehicles that illegally pass a stopped school bus displaying its stop arm and flashing warning lights.
Before a citation is issued, each recorded incident will be reviewed by Broward County School Police to determine whether a violation occurred.
Drivers found in violation may receive a $225 civil citation under Florida law.
School officials said the goal of the program is to reduce dangerous driving behavior near school buses and better protect students.
The camera systems are being installed through a partnership with BusPatrol. District officials said the company is covering the installation costs, while revenue generated from citations will fund program operations and student safety initiatives.
According to Broward County Public Schools, 1,244 illegal school bus passing incidents were reported during the 2025 to 2026 school year, highlighting the need for increased enforcement and public awareness around school bus safety.
