TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – More than 30,000 students returned to classrooms in Leon County Wednesday for the first day of school.
The first day brought excitement and some nerves for students and their families.
Beverly Collins said she was nervous as she dropped off her niece for her first day of freshman year at Lincoln High School.
“I’m nervous a little bit, but I know she’s going to do well,” Collins said. “This is actually the high school I went to, so it’s good to have a family member at the same high school that I went to. It’s going to be awesome.”

Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna said the district is focused on building on the momentum from last school year.
“The theme this year is getting back to basics,” he said. “Getting back to reading, writing, math to build off the success we had and our students had last year. We had historic school grades last school year.”
As the school year gets underway, drivers are also being reminded to slow down as students return to school.
School zone speed enforcement resumes Wednesday, with speed cameras operating during school zone hours. Speeding in a school zone can result in a $100 fine.
