Dr. Temple Grandin — world-renowned author, autism advocate and professor of animal science — will visit Southwest Florida on Saturday, Aug. 22, for a free event as part of Family Initiative’s Parent Group Speaker Series at Babcock Ranch.
“Dr. Grandin’s message that different minds bring different strengths is exactly what our Speaker Series is about,” said Anjali Van Drie of Family Initiative, a Cape Coral-based nonprofit. “We’re honored to bring her to Southwest Florida and give our community the chance to hear directly from someone who has spent her life showing what’s possible when we focus on ability instead of limitation.”
The event is part of Family Initiative’s ongoing monthly Speaker Series, which focuses on building understanding, access, and belonging for individuals with different abilities. It will take place at 1 p.m. at the Babcock Ranch Field House, 43281 Cypress Parkway, Punta Gorda.
Grandin’s talk, titled “Great Minds Are Not All the Same,” will offer her firsthand perspective on living with autism and the importance of focusing on strengths rather than limitations. Drawing from her personal experiences and decades of advocacy, she will discuss early intervention, developing practical skills, preparing individuals for meaningful employment, and creating opportunities for greater independence and success.
A book signing will follow the presentation.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Given the Babcock Ranch Field House’s capacity of 2,000, Family Initiative encourages the community to register early, as a strong turnout is expected.
