FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — The Fort Pierce Police Department has arrested a man in connection with an Aug. 1 hit-and-run crash that left a 7-year-old boy seriously injured.

FPPD says Demetrius Johnson was arrested at 2905 U.S. Highway 1 and faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and driving with a suspended license.

The crash occurred at 8:55 p.m. Aug. 1 at the intersection of North 25th Street and Avenue M, according to police. Two children were crossing the roadway in a marked crosswalk when Johnson allegedly struck one of them.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows two children running across the street in the crosswalk as a vehicle makes a sharp left turn and strikes the 7-year-old boy. Johnson, 34, is then seen briefly getting out of his vehicle to check on the child before returning to the vehicle and driving away.

Police say the 7-year-old boy has been released from the hospital and is recovering. The investigation remains ongoing.
