Torey Alston is facing a vote next week on whether he should be fired as president of Broward College, barely 18 months into his tenure.
The college’s Board of Trustees has scheduled a special meeting for 8 a.m. Wednesday to consider a motion from Trustee Michael Caschette “to terminate Torey Alston without cause.” The same board unanimously hired Alston on Jan. 31, 2025, and approved a four-year contract on Feb. 24, 2025.
The contract states that the board can terminate Alston without cause with 30 days’ written notice to Alston.
Caschette and Alexis Yarbrough, chairwoman of the trustees, declined to comment when reached by the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Thursday. Alston couldn’t be reached.
Shortly after being hired, Alston called the Broward College president job “the best job in Broward County” and said he looked forward to working with trustees, faculty and staff.
But his relationship with trustees soured in recent months. He was criticized in recent meetings about issues such as communication with the board, the low passage rate of Broward College students on nursing exams and computer system issues that created delays and errors in student registrations, according to minutes from recent board meetings and retreats.
Alston is a Broward native who served as an appointee of Ron DeSantis to fill vacancies on the Broward County Commission and Broward School Board. He ran unsuccessfully in 2024 to keep his School Board seat.
Before joining Broward College, Alston served as the executive director of the Greater Miami Expressway Agency, which oversees five roadways in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. He also served as chief of staff for the Florida Department of Transportation, chief of staff for former Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief and two administrative positions for Miami-Dade Schools.
