A heartbreaking animal cruelty case in Palm City has left the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast caring for 36 border collies in desperate need of medical treatment, patience and community support.

The dogs, including three puppies up to 6 months old, were removed from a hoarding situation after the Martin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Paige O’Donnell on felony charges of animal cruelty and improper confinement.

When the dogs arrived at the Humane Society, staff immediately provided food and water. Many were covered in feces and suffering from skin and eye infections. Several appeared withdrawn or nearly catatonic from their ordeal.

Some of the dogs are being shaved under mild sedation because severe matting, physical pain and emotional distress make grooming difficult.  Because of the extent of their medical and emotional needs, the Humane Society cannot yet say when the border collies will be available for adoption. Many are expected to require foster homes as they slowly recover.

For now, the organization’s greatest need is financial support to help cover the ongoing cost of veterinary care, treatment, food and rehabilitation.

The community can also help by adopting or fostering one of the many other dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits already waiting for homes. Doing so creates valuable space and resources for rescued animals still undergoing treatment.

The Humane Society’s “Name Your Price” adoption special will continue until further notice.

For these 36 dogs, recovery will take time. But with compassionate care and community support, their lives can begin again.

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast is a no-kill animal welfare organization located at 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave. in Palm City, Florida. Since 1955, it has been a leading advocate for animal protection.
