Black bear spotted near Jacksonville State University prompts police warning

Police in Jacksonville are urging residents to stay alert after a black bear was spotted around the city and near Jacksonville State University’s campus.

Authorities said the bear was seen Thursday morning near the Chief Ladiga Trail.

Police noted that the bear has not caused any issues so far.

University officials remind students and others in the areat to remain aware of their surroundings and give wildlife plenty of space.

According to police, wildlife experts believe the bear’s natural instinct will lead it to leave town soon. In the meantime, residents are advised to keep pets and pet food indoors and to avoid approaching or feeding the bear.
