A public viewing for Officer “XY” Brown will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm on Sunday, August 23, at Sandy Run Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1503 Hargett St. in Jacksonville, according to Jacksonville Public Safety.

Officer “XY” Brown’s celebration of life will be on Monday, August 24, at 11:00 a.m. at River of Life Church, located at 2460 Gum Branch Rd in Jacksonville. Interment will follow at Coastal Carolina Veterans’ Cemetery located at 109 Montford Landing Rd. in Jacksonville.

JPD said it learned of Brown’s death Sunday, Aug. 9.

Brown’s law enforcement career began in 1957, when he started volunteering with JPD while working at Camp Lejeune. According to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Brown volunteered for more than a decade before becoming a full-time officer in 1971.

In 1985, Brown began serving as a school crossing guard. He continued in that role for nearly four decades, becoming a familiar presence to generations of Jacksonville students and families.

Jacksonville Public Safety said residents should expect traffic delays during this time.
