Resident shoots, kills intruder at mobile home park in St. Lucie County; stand your ground case under review

  • August 15, 2026

A person is dead after a shooting Wednesday night at a mobile home park in St. Lucie County that deputies said stemmed from an ongoing dispute.

The sheriff’s office and fire district responded to the shooting at 9:11 p.m. in the 3300 block of Orange Avenue at the Seminole Mobile Home Park community.

Deputies and St. Lucie County Fire District personnel found one person suffering from a gunshot wound. The person who was shot was taken to a local hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

“During the investigation, we learned that there was a dispute between the shooter, who we believe is our victim here, and the suspect who arrived at the residence. What the dispute was over is kind of muddy right now,” St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro said.

The sheriff said the two people involved in the shooting had a dispute via text message and verbally, described as “ongoing.”

“(The person who was killed) shows up at the house, knocks on the door, bangs on the door. … comes inside the residence once the door is open, immediately pushes our victim, who’s the homeowner there, punches him two times in the midsection area, at which time the victim backed away from the suspect, pulled out a handgun, and shot the suspect one time point blank in the chest,” Del Toro said.

Investigators obtained and executed a search warrant at the residence, recovering a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol they believe was used in the shooting.

“The handgun that was used was recovered during a search warrant at the residence. We worked all night, working about nine hours out at the residence,” Del Toro said.

The sheriff said they are working with the state attorney’s office to determine whether a crime was committed or this is a stand-your-ground case. No charges have been filed in the case.

Del Toro said the homeowner’s sister and girlfriend were inside the home at the time of the shooting, corroborating the circumstances of the incident.

The scene was cleared shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators believe this was an isolated incident and said there is no immediate threat to the surrounding community.

The name of the person who was killed has not been released.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. This includes witnesses who may have seen events leading up to the shooting or anyone with relevant video or other information.

WPTV spoke with neighbors at the mobile home park, who said this shooting is out of character for their neighborhood.
