PORTLAND, Ore. — Caiya Hanks returned after a 14-month absence while recovering from an ACL injury to score the winning goal deep in stoppage time to give the Portland Thorns a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride on Saturday night.

Eight minutes after coming on as a substitute, Hanks scored in the 96th minute to give the Thorns (10-6-4, 34 points) the victory at Portland’s Providence Park in front of 19,106 fans. Orlando (7-11-2, 23 points) has lost three straight. Hanks was able to dribble into space and launched a shot from the top of the penalty area that rocketed past Orlando keeper Anna Moorhouse.

Deyna Castellanos gave Portland the lead in the 58th minute with a curling shot from a tight angle. Pietra Tordin got her ninth assist on the goal.

The Pride responded shortly after, when Julie Doyle found Oihane along the right wing. Oihane battled and managed to get a cross in that was punched away by Portland goalkeeper MacKenzie Arnold and rebounded to Orlando forward Jacquie Ovalle. Ovalle managed to reroute the ball into the back of the net in the 63rd minute.

The goal was her second of the season and her fifth goal contribution this season — second-most on the team. Ovalle’s goal was Orlando’s first at Providence Park since 2021.

“I thought we were terrific in the first half,” Orlando coach Seb Hines said in comments provided by the team. “I thought we came to Providence Park with loads of intent. We didn’t create any clear-cut opportunities, but we had a lot of good momentum.

“Then we get ourselves back in the game and stuff happens, it is just not going our way. Everyone is absolutely devastated. We put a lot of hard work into today’s performance and you hate to lose in that manner. You hate to lose, but to lose in that manner is devastating.”

Barbra Banda started for the Pride after returning from playing for Zambia in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The leading goal-scorer in the NWSL took three shots, one on target, before being subbed off in the 65th minute.

The Pride next travels to Washington, D.C., to close out a two-match road trip against the Spirit on Sunday at 4 p.m.
