Leon County libraries open as cooling stations Monday following extreme heat warning

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Public libraries in Leon County are opening Monday following an extreme heat warning issued by the National Weather Service.

The six branch libraries that are usually closed on Monday are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as cooling stations. The LeRoy Collins Main Library will open during its regular hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and those who need relief on Sunday can stay until 6 p.m.

Cooling stations typically include water, restrooms, activities and an indoor air-conditioned space. Leon County Commissioner Christian Caban said the county is preparing for the heat.

“County Emergency Management teams are focused on the forecast and responding now. I want to thank the first responders and County employees who will be working in these conditions to keep our community safe. Every County library will be open Monday as a cooling station, so please take care of yourself, check on your neighbors and use these facilities if you need relief.”

Those libraries include:

LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library, located at 200 W. Park Avenue.Bruce J. Host Northeast Branch Library, located at 5513 Thomasville Road.Dr. B.L. Perry Jr. Branch Library, located at 2817 South Adams Street.Eastside Branch Library, located at 1583 Pedrick Road.Jane G. Sauls Fort Braden Branch Library, located at 16327 Blountstown Highway.Lake Jackson Branch Library, located at 3840-300 North Monroe StreetWoodville Branch Library, located at 8000 Old Woodville Road.

The cooling stations are expected to operate until the heat warning expires.
