ARDMORE, Pa. (WCTV) – Florida State men’s golf standout Jack Whaley dominated the final round of match play to win the 16th U.S. Amateur Championship on Sunday afternoon.
The English born rising senior took down Jay Leng Jr. of Stanford, 4&3, over 36 holes at Merlon Golf Club to become just the third Englishman all-time to win the prestigious event and FSU’s first ever golfer to outlast the field.
Whaley is the second straight victor of the event to have local ties, Thomasville’s Mason Howell won the event last year at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The Seminoles is now granted an exemption into both the U.S. Open and British Open held next year at Pebble Beach and St. Andrews respectively. The win will also likely garner an invitation to play in Augusta to play in The Masters in 2027.
