For me, sailing aboard “Ilma,” one of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s newest luxury yachts, had been on my bucket list since the brand first announced its entry into luxury yachting. When the opportunity finally came, the itinerary was almost beside the point. Departing from Port Everglades made the trip especially convenient, allowing me to board just minutes from home without the hassle of air travel.
The experience began long before I stepped onboard. From the moment I arrived at the terminal, Ritz-Carlton’s renowned service was already on display. A staff member greeted me curbside, confirmed my reservation, arranged for my luggage and personally escorted me through every step of the boarding process. Whether guiding me through security, check-in or the final walk onto the yacht, there was always someone there to assist. The seamless attention to detail immediately set the tone for the voyage ahead.

Stepping aboard “Ilma,” I quickly realized this wasn’t a traditional cruise. With its intimate size (only about 450 guests) and elegant design, the yacht feels more like an exclusive floating boutique hotel than a cruise ship. The atmosphere is sophisticated without being formal, luxurious without feeling pretentious and peaceful without ever being dull. There are no crowded buffets, endless announcements or packed pool decks. Instead, guests are encouraged to slow down, relax and enjoy the journey.
The accommodations are beautifully appointed, and every public space reflects the understated elegance synonymous with The Ritz-Carlton brand. Whether enjoying coffee on your private terrace, lounging by the pool or simply watching the horizon from the deck, every corner of the yacht invites you to unwind.
Dining proved to be another highlight. Each one of the five fine-dining restaurants delivered exceptional cuisine with attentive service that never felt rushed. One piece of advice I would offer future guests is to have your personal suite ambassador arrange your dinner reservations each evening. Their familiarity with the dining venues helps ensure you experience each restaurant with ease.

Although our itinerary included several stops in the Bahamas, Mother Nature had other plans. Due to weather conditions, visits to Bimini and Great Exuma were canceled. Surprisingly, I found myself hardly disappointed. This voyage was never really about checking destinations off a list. The yacht itself became the destination.
Our remaining ports still offered memorable experiences. In Key West, I highly recommend visiting the award-winning Museum of Art & History at the Custom House. During my visit, the museum featured an impressive display of Guy Harvey’s original pencil drawings lining the grand staircase. In Nassau, the upscale Italian restaurant Café Matisse is an excellent choice for lunch and well worth seeking out if it’s open during your visit.
Life onboard offers plenty to discover between ports. Guests can participate in a guided art tour showcasing the yacht’s carefully curated collection or enjoy hands-on experiences like sushi-making and flower arranging classes. These activities add another dimension to the voyage and encourage guests to immerse themselves in the lifestyle rather than simply passing time at sea.
Perhaps the feature that best captures the spirit of luxury yachting is the marina platform. When conditions allow, the aft of the yacht transforms into a private waterfront complete with an impressive variety of complimentary non-motorized water sports equipment and luxury inflatables, plus direct access to the sea. It’s a signature experience that truly sets “Ilma” apart from traditional luxury cruises.
The guests onboard ranged primarily from travelers in their mid-30s through their 60s, although several families were sailing during the Easter holiday. While children are certainly welcome, the overall atmosphere is best suited for those who appreciate personalized service, exceptional dining, elegant surroundings and a relaxed pace.
