KENLY, N.C. — A Florida man is facing multiple charges after Kenly police say a cargo theft investigation led to the recovery of approximately $258,000 worth of stolen copper wire.
The Kenly Police Department said it received information on Aug. 14 about a suspected cargo theft organization operating across multiple jurisdictions.
Officers worked with out-of-state agencies as they investigated the information.
During the investigation, police located a stolen 53-foot J.B. Hunt trailer.
Investigators determined both the trailer and its contents had been reported stolen.
Police later located the driver at a local truck stop.
Officers said the driver was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
Police also said a concealed handgun was found on him during the arrest.
Investigators later obtained a search warrant for the trailer.
During that search, officers found approximately $258,000 worth of stolen copper wire, according to the department.
Police identified the driver as 41-year-old Jarrel Lamont Nightingale of Florida.
Nightingale is charged with felony possession of stolen goods or property, felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle and carrying a concealed gun.
He was placed under a $20,000 secured bond.
Kenly police thanked the Selma Police Department and Four Oaks Police Department for assisting with the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies continue looking into the suspected cargo theft operation.
