JACKSONVILLE, Onslow County — A man charged with murder in connection with the 2024 shooting death of 19-year-old Terrance Grant is expected to appear in Onslow County Superior Court Monday.

According to information provided by District Attorney Ernie Lee, Jonathan Lee Mills Jr. is expected in court at about 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the old Onslow County courthouse at the corner of Old Bridge Street and Court Street.

Court information provided by the District Attorney’s Office lists Mills as charged with murder. The case number is 24 CRS 305539, and the listed date of offense is May 12, 2024.

Assistant District Attorney Brittany Hart is expected to handle the case, with Judge Robert Roupe presiding, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The case stems from a May 2024 shooting at Windsor Place Apartments in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville officials confirmed on May 13, 2024, that Mills, who was 19 at the time, had been arrested and charged with murder following the death of Grant.

Police said officers responded to Windsor Place Apartments at approximately 1:26 p.m. on May 12, 2024. Grant was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time, neighbors told us the shooting raised concerns about violence in their community.

“The violence is starting to spread out into this side of town. This has never happened here before, but it is coming to this side,” one neighbor said.

Another neighbor told us the violence had them considering moving.

Mills has been charged in the case, but a criminal charge is an accusation. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
