Tallahassee man indicted on federal bank robbery charge, faces decades in prison

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A 54-year-old Tallahassee man accused of robbing a local bank has been indicted in federal court and could face decades in prison if convicted.

James Dalton Bryant, 54, of Tallahassee, Florida, was indicted in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, according to an announcement from John P. Heekin, the United States attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

The Tallahassee Police Department said Bryant was arrested and charged with robbery and grand theft after officers responded to a reported robbery at the Regions Bank at 2266 N. Monroe St. on June 22 just before 9 a.m.

Detectives determined Bryant arrived at the bank in a vehicle with two other people, went inside and handed a teller a note demanding money, then left with just over $3,000 in cash, police said.

Investigators quickly identified Bryant as a suspect, police said. At the time of his arrest, police said Bryant had more than $900 in cash, primarily large-denomination bills, along with additional evidence connected to the robbery.

Bryant appeared in federal court for his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Judge Martin A. Fitzpatrick in Tallahassee. A jury trial is scheduled for Oct. 5, 2026, before District Court Judge Robert L. Hinkle.

If convicted, Bryant faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment.

The case was jointly investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Tallahassee Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric K. Mountin.

An indictment is an allegation by a grand jury and is not evidence of guilt. Bryant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative focused on illegal immigration enforcement, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
