Four candidates are vying for two spots in Tuesday’s primary election for a crucial South Florida congressional district.

District 27 runs from downtown Miami south into Coral Gables, Pinecrest and Cutler Bay.

The seat currently belongs to Republican Maria Elvira Salazar, who was first elected in November 2020 and has been re-elected twice.

Salazar touts her work on immigration and has broken from her Republican Party on that very issue.

“We have to come up to a realization, we meaning the Republican Party, that it is time for us to pause and consider new strategies when it comes to immigration,” she said.

Michael Arias, a lawyer and Republican, is hoping to unseat Salazar in Tuesday’s primary and questions her honesty.

“She was taking credit for bringing money into the district until it was pointed out to her that she voted against the bill. And then she said ‘I don’t remember.’ And I thought here is a person, she either really does not remember or she is lying about it,” Arias said.

On the Democrat side, former Miami news personality Eliott Rodriguez is taking on Robin Peguero, a former local prosecutor who worked in Washington as a junior staffer up to chief of staff.

“I am ready to be Congressman on day one and I think the moment is perilous and it is an important time in our country’s history,” Peguero said. “We need someone who has experience and represents a younger, fresher generation of leadership.”

“I am focused on beating Maria Elvira Salazar, fighting Donald Trump, flipping Congress, and I am the Democrat who can do that,” Rodriguez said.

Before Elvira Salazar the seat had been held by a Democrat, and it’s one they believe they can flip.

“The control of the House is going to come down to a handful of seats, and this is one of those, if Democrats are able to win in 27, their path to the speakership in the House of Representatives gets that much stronger,” NBC6 political analyst Alex Penelas said.
