Classes start at Tallahassee State College, FAMU and FSU students will begin semester next week

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Capital City is welcoming tens of thousands of college students back to town.

Classes started today at Tallahassee State College and both FSU and FAMU will begin classes next week.

A TSC spokesperson says enrollment this fall is up to 13,000 students.

Mackelle Remy is new to TSC and to Tallahassee.

“I’ve been looking around for my classes for tomorrow and the other days so I don’t get lost,” Remy said. “So other than that it’s been great. I like the environment and everything.”

Remy is eventually hoping to transfer to FSU.

A TSC spokesperson says 77% of the students ultimately transfer to a university, and most of them – about 60% – enroll at FSU or FAMU.

“I’m confused and a little lost, but other than that I’m excited,” TSC student Heaven Taylor said. She’s still in high school but the aspiring psychologist is already working on her associate’s degree.

“I’m almost done,” Taylor said. “This will be my second to last semester here.”

TSC is offering several new degree programs this fall including a BSN in nursing and two new degrees in business.

Students will also have access to the brand new Innovation Hub which gives them a chance to go hands on with emerging technologies like 3D printers, lasers and robotic arms.

“This is our first full semester in the fall where we’ll be able to engage our students from the very beginning,” said Dr. Anthony Jones, Dean of Library Services and Learning Commons.

“I will go on the record and say we are probably one of the only state colleges in Florida which has this multi-functional space,” Jones said.

TSC is the first Tallahassee campus to start classes for the fall semester.

FSU and FAMU are scheduled to start classes next Monday, August 24, but many students are already back in town.

FSU students started moving in Friday and FAMU students started moving in today.
