Hurricanes wide receiver Cam Vaughn has been dismissed from the team, UM coach Mario Cristobal said on WQAM’s “The Joe Rose Show” on Monday morning.
“Wish him the best,” Cristobal said.
Cristobal did not say why Vaughn had been dismissed from the team.
Vaughn is one of three players who have left the team since the end of spring practice. Defensive lineman Hayden Lowe and cornerback Jontavius Wyman left the team before fall camp started. Transfer safety Conrad Hussey also left the team in the offseason.
“I don’t think (players leaving affects the team,” Cristobal said. “And look, philosophically, you want it to work for everybody. You really, really do. You work endless days and nights so it can work. And then there comes a time where decisions have to be made, and that’s just the way it is. It’s a process that nothing or nobody gets in the way of being 1 and 0. And you always do your best for those that don’t make it here to help them find opportunities, as well. But in terms of when you make moves, you make moves that are strictly for the betterment of the team. That’s why they are made.”
Vaughn never played a game for the Hurricanes. He transferred to UM during the offseason after spending one season at West Virginia. With the Mountaineers last year, Vaughn had 35 catches for 541 yards and four touchdowns. Vaughn also played at Jacksonville State in 2023 and 2024.
The Hurricanes have a deep wide receiver room, led by 1,000-yard receivers Cooper Barkate and Malachi Toney. Vaughn had been battling for the third starting role along with Vandrevius Jacobs, Daylyn Upshaw, Josh Moore and others.
Cristobal addresses Lyle arrest
UM running back Jordan Lyle was arrested on Thursday on charges of reckless driving and aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer at high speed, according to the State Attorney’s Office.
On Monday, Cristobal said they were waiting for the legal process to play out before taking any action. He did not say whether Lyle would be suspended from the team or for any of Miami’s upcoming games.
Cristobal said he talks to the team about being safe on the road “all the time, all year long.”
Lyle, who entered a plea of not guilty on Friday, according to court records, turned himself in at the Broward County Main Jail on Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Wednesday. He was released on a $55,000 bond, according to a State Attorney’s Office spokesperson.
Three Hurricanes picked for Walter Camp watch list
Three Miami stars — running back Mark Fletcher Jr., quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Malachi Toney — were named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list on Monday.
The award is given to the top player in the nation.
Miami is one of nine teams that has multiple players on the preseason watch list.
