Key Biscayne seniors can close out the summer with barbecue, music and dancing during a celebration of the community’s young-at-heart residents.

The Village of Key Biscayne will host its 15th annual End of Summer Bar-B-Q Lunch and ASK Club Performance at noon, Thursday, Aug. 27, in the Island Room at the Community Center.

This year’s theme, “Latin Flavor,” will bring a taste of Latin culture to the event.

Roxy Lohuis-Tejeda, Key Biscayne adults and senior services coordinator, said participants will hear old time Cuban music and new Latin music including Bad Bunny and other Latin artists.

Lohis-Tejeda said the entertainment will also feature a 15-minute show by Enhanced Performance Troop, a group of dancers choreographed by Community Center dance instructor Marilyn Myles.

Lohuis-Tejeda said the event has become successful over the years with roughly 100 people turning out annually.

She said the village is expecting a bigger turnout this year including a large population of snowbirds.

“I grew up in the North and we close out the summer season around Labor Day,” Lohuis-Tejeda said. “You would like your final BBQ before the cold season arrives.”

Barbecue is an American tradition that brings people together for gatherings and celebrations such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Key Biscayne officials want to show their appreciation with a BBQ event for seniors, many of whom have made key contributions to the village over the years.

That includes volunteering their service for community cleanup events, being part of It Takes a Village in an effort to build a more inclusive community by helping kids with special needs, and other volunteer projects.

The Key Biscayne Village Council and Town Hall staff are expected to be on hand to celebrate the achievements of senior citizens.

“Everyone is always welcome,” said Lohuis-Tejeda. “The mayor and council are part of our mailing invitations for all of our events.”

The event is free for Key Biscayne seniors and other residents.

Guests of seniors can attend, but must pay a $10 fee.
